About Nisolo

When it comes to Nisolo‘s thoughtfully-designed shoes, accessories, and wardrobe staples, the quality is something you can feel — and is evident from the very first step. Dedicated to delivering versatility, functionality, and durability, each of Nisolo’s pieces exemplify the brand’s elevated, lasting standard of fashionable, livable practicality. According to the brand, “Good design should make your life easier” — and Nisolo does just that.

Why We Love Them

Nisolo is a sustainable and ethical leather goods brand that sells Men and Women’s shoes, bags, and other accessories. While producing high-quality leather goods at fair prices for consumers, Nisolo ensures their workers can produce goods safely and at a fair wage while giving back to the environment through deforestation partnerships and programs.

Origin Story

Co-founded by Patrick Woodyard and Zoe Cleary in Nashville, Nisolo envisions a fashion industry that values people and the planet just as much as the end consumer. As Woodyard worked on a development project in Trujilo, Peru, he stumbled across local artisans hand-crafting exceptional leather goods who had trouble accessing the global market to sell them. He returned home and partnered with fashion-industry-alum, Zoe Cleary, and launched Nisolo to provide sustainable employment for these artisans, while offering a better way of doing business to the rest of the fashion industry, worldwide. Since its founding in 2011, Nisolo has kept true to its mission by becoming a Climate Neutral and B-Corp Certified business and investing in living wages and forest conservation.

The TL;DR

  • High quality, responsibly handcrafted leather goods that have style, comfort, function, and ethical manufacturing at their core
  • B-Corp Certified; focuses on giving back to the environment
  • Vertical supply chain – they own the factory where they make most of their products
  • Nisolo pays 100% of their artisans a living wage
  • Certified Climate Neutral; combats climate change by offsetting 100% of their carbon emissions

The Science & The Soul

The Science

Comfort isn’t just a feature for Nisolo — it’s a way of life; a human birthright; a must. The leather is butter soft, crafted to conform comfortably to your feet. The soles are soft,  supportive, and durable. The experience of Nisolo’s pieces feels so natural, and the easy, deceptively simple convenience of that comfort is what makes this brand an absolute standout.

Nisolo recognizes everything they make has an impact on people and the planet, and they are committed to giving back more than they take. The brand’s B Corporation certification means that the company meets the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility. In 2019 they launched The Lowest Wage Challenge to encourage consumers to inspire a living wage movement across the fashion industry, and they’re continually committed to measuring, reducing, and offsetting their carbon footprint — securing their position as an industry leader and inspirational force for corporate accountability and positive change.

The Soul

As a leading ethical brand in the fashion industry, Nisolo continues to scale up their social and environmental impact initiatives, and ensure that other fashion brands are following their lead. Knowing the negative effects like overproduction and resource depletion that the fashion industry can have on the environment, Nisolo partners with organizations to give back to the environment and curb overproduction. Since early 2018, they have offset the carbon emissions of everything they have produced by investing in forest conservation in the Cordillera Azul of the Peruvian Amazon through a partnership with Ecosphere+.

As a Climate Neutral certified company, Nisolo offsets carbon emissions across all of their operations — ranging from the production of raw materials, to factory manufacturing, shipping, and employee commuting. To date, Nisolo’s customers, partners, and artisans have enabled them to protect 318,190 trees covering an area of 57,950,741 square feet (that’s the same size as 452 soccer fields) from deforestation in the Amazon Basin — and offset 2,991 metrics tons of CO2. This is the equivalent of taking 646 cars off the road for a year.
